History was made in Vatican City as Robert Francis Prevost, a Chicago-born cardinal, was elected the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, becoming the first American ever to hold the papacy. The papal conclave, which began on May 7 with a record 133 cardinal electors, reached a decisive vote on the second day, selecting Prevost as the new spiritual leader for the Church’s 1.4 billion members.

At just after 6 p.m. local time in Vatican City (noon ET), a plume of white smoke billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, signaling to the world that a new pope had been chosen. The bells of St. Peter’s Basilica rang out as more than 10,000 faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square erupted in cheers, eagerly awaiting the first appearance of their new pontiff.

Pope Leo XIV, as Prevost will now be known, appeared on the iconic balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, visibly moved by the historic moment. His first words as pope were a humble and powerful blessing: “Peace be with you.” Cardinal Dominique Mamberti formally announced the election and Prevost’s chosen papal name to the world moments before the new pope greeted the crowd.

The election follows the death of Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88, leaving behind a transformative legacy. Prevost, 69, brings a unique background to the papacy, having spent two decades serving in Peru before being elevated to cardinal. His global experience and pastoral heart are seen as assets as he steps into one of the world’s most influential religious roles.

The selection of an American pope marks a historic shift for the Roman Catholic Church, with many around the world watching to see how Pope Leo XIV will guide the Church through today’s pressing spiritual and social challenges. As the faithful across the globe pray for their new shepherd, Pope Leo XIV begins his mission with a message of unity, humility, and peace.
